COURSES OF STUDY
The two year Higher Secondary Course in Arts and Science is run according to the Assam Higher Secondary Education Council (AHSEC) regulations.
The college offers the following subjects in H.S. course :

(a) English, MIL (Assamese) /Alt. English and Environmental Education are compulsory for both the streams.
(b) The applicant of H.S. course must select three/four elective subjects from the following list:
(i) Advanced Assamese/Sanskrit/Geography
(iv) Political Science/Mathematics
(vi) Logic and Philosophy
(iv) Biology/Computer Science & Application
N.B.- The applicant should read carefully the following rules before filling up the Admission Form of Arts Stream.
(i) He/ She should mention five/six elective subjects in the Form preference wise, so that he/she may be allowed to take any three/four subjects after counseling. (ii)In the event of exceeding the maximum enrolment capacity, which is 180 for any subject in a class, Elective Subjects may be selected by the Admission Committee, and in this respect the decision of the Committee shall be final.
(II) THREE YEAR DEGREE COURSE (TDC)
Tihu College has implemented semester system in TDC levels from the session 2011-12. A student seeking admission into TDC (both in Arts and Science) has to complete the course in six semesters (two semesters per year) as per schedule framed by G.U. Some important points of regulation and syllabus regarding Semester System framed by G.U. are given in the next section.
A student seeking admission into the 1st Semester (Arts) may choose any one subject as Major from the following list :
(1) Assamese (2) English (3) Economics (4 Education (5) Geography (6) History (7) Philosophy (8) Pol. Science (9) Mathematics.
* A student with Major has to choose any one subject as 1st Subsidiary from the following list of groups :
(1) Philosophy (2) Elective Assamese/ Sanskrit (3) History/Mathematics (4) Political Science/Education (5) Economics. (6) Geography (7) Elective English
Moreover he/she has to choose M.I.L. (Assamese/ Alternative English) as 2nd Subsidiary and English as compulsory subject.
This combination will be continued for 1st and 2nd Semesters. In 3rd and 4th Semesters instead of English he/she has to take Environmental Studies as a compulsory subject. In 5th and 6th Semesters he/she has to continue only the Major subject.
(A) As per the new Semester System of Gauhati University, a student offering Major in English will have to take, as his/her Second Subsidiary, a subject other than Alternative English / Elective English.
(B) A student offering Major in Assamese will have to offer, as his/her Second Subsidiary, a subject other than Assamese (MIL)/Elective Assamese.
** A student without Major has to choose any two subjects as 1st Elective and 2nd Elective from the List-2 given above.
Moreover, he/she has to choose MIL (Assamese) or Alt. English as 3rd Elective and English as a compulsory subject.
This combination will be continued for 1st and 2nd Semesters. In 3rd and 4th Semesters instead of English, he/she has to take Environmental Science as a compulsory subject. In 5th and 6th Semesters, he/she has to continue only 1st and 2nd Elective.
TDC (Science)A student seeking admission into 1st Semester (Science) may choose any one subject as Major from the following list.
(1) Physics, (2) Chemistry (3) Zoology, (4) Botany, (5) Mathematics, (6) Geography
* A student of Science with Major has to choose any two subjects as 1st Subsidiary and 2nd Subsidiary from the following list of groups :List-4
(1) Physics/ Zoology, (2) Physics/ Botany, (3) Chemistry, (4) Geography, (5) Mathematics
Moreover, he/she has to take Functional English as a compulsory subject. This combination will be continued for 1st and 2nd Semesters. In 3rd and 4th Semesters, instead of Functional English he/she has to take Env. Studies as a compulsory subject. In 5th and 6th Semesters he/she has to continue only the Major subject. ** A student without Major has to choose any three subjects as 1st, 2nd and 3rd Elective from List-4 given above.
Moreover, he/she has to take Functional English as a compulsory subject. This combination will be continued for 1st and 2nd Semesters. In 3rd and 4th Semesters, instead of Functional English he/she has to take Environmental Studies as a compulsory subject. In 5th and 6th Semesters, he/she has to continue only any two Elective subjects as 1st and 2nd Elective from the above three Elective subject opted for.
A Student seeking admission in to the B.Com 1st Semester may choose any one of the following as his/her Major Subject-
1. Accountancy 2. Management.
As per the regulations of the Gauhati University, a student enrolled in to the B.Com Course will have definite number of general papers in each semester on various aspects and horizons of commerce. If he/she opts for Major, he/she will have one additional paper in each semester of the course.
A few Important Regulations regarding Semester System under G.U.
(1) There will be six semesters covering 3 (Three) years.
(2) More weightage is given to internal assessment.
Internal assessment / evaluation = 20%
External ( semester end ) evaluation = 80%
(3) There shall be two sessional examinations in each semester.
(4) There is provision for clearance of absent or failed papers.
(5) There is provision for "Repeat" of any one of the theory papers in 1st, 2nd, 3rd & 4th Semesters, and may be allowed for "Betterment" of marks in one paper in 5th semester provided the student secures less than 45% of marks in that paper.
In the sixth semester, there must be at least one paper where the students are given opportunities to apply their knowledge. The course may be so designed that students' creativity is encouraged. This could be a small academic project, an advance level practical work, literary survey on a topic, field/survey work or any other work which may induce creativity among the pupil. (III) BCA & PGDCA Courses
Three Year Bachelor of Computer Application (BCA) & One Year Post Graduate Diploma in Computer Application (PGDCA) courses have been introduced under the regulations of Gauhati University. These two job-oriented courses are meant for interested students of the community. The Department of Computer Science has been striving hard to extend quality teaching-learning facilities to its bonafide students.
(A)BCA Course curriculum as per Gauhati University
Duration of course : 3 years (Full Time) to be completed in six semesters.
Eligibility: The candidate must have passed Higher Secondary or equivalent level examination from Science/Commerce/Arts Stream. Students who have passed the Higher Secondary examination with either Mathematics or Computer Science as one of the subjects obtaining minimum pass mark in the subject should be given preference at the time of admission. Students completing Diploma in CSE/IT from AICTE recognized institutes are also eligible for taking admission. The Colleges may have their own cut-off marks which they found to be reasonable for them and/or hold admission test for the final selection of candidates. Colleges may offer bridge course in Mathematics for admitted students who did not have Mathematics at the HS level.

(B) PGDCA Course curriculum as per Gauhati University
Duration of course : 1 year (Full Time) to be completed in two semesters.
Entry requirements : Graduate from any discipline.
Admission : Twice a year (June & December)

(IV) Regular Post-Graduate courses under GU
Regular Post-Graduate courses under Gauhati University in Education and History, have been started by Tihu College from the academic session, 2017-2018. with intake capacity of 20 students each, these Post-Graduate courses have been run with full complaince to the University rules and regulations.
Duration of Courses : Four Semesters (CBCS).
Entry Requirements : Graduation with a minimum 2nd Class in the concerned major subject.
Admission : June/July every year,through common entrance test organized by Gauhati University.
(V) Distance and Open Education Courses
Tihu College has a full fledged affiliated Contact cum Study cum Examination centre of Institute of Distance and Open Learning (IDOL) under Gauhati University for imparting PG/PGD/BA/BCA Courses in open Schooling mode in a few conventional as well as joboriented subjects.

(VI) Accredited Study Centre of Assam State Open Schooling
Tihu College has an Accredited Study Centre (ASC) of Assam State Open Schooling (ASOS) under AHSEC to communicate its HS course. The mission of ASOS is to provide education to all with special concern for girls and women, rural youth, working men and women, SC and ST & other disadvantaged persons who because of one reason or the other could not continue their education with the formal system. Without upper age limit for admission, a learner can choose any subject combination from a list of subjects offered as per the criteria given in the scheme of studies in either English or Assamese medium.
